Museum of Byzantine Culture #1

At the East part of the historical center of Thessaloniki, only few meters away from the coast you will find the most beautiful museum of the city. The Museum of Byzantine Culture. White Tower from inside

The white Tower

 White Tower is one of the most famous monuments of Thessaloniki and one of the most popular spots of the city's waterfront. During the Byzantine years it used to be a part of the old fortification but later in 15th century, Ottomans reconstructed it and transformed it into a noturious prison. The mass executions that took place there, made the tower the most hateful place in the city and that's why people gave it the name Red Tower or Tower of blood.

The Tower had been for centuries part of the walls of the old city and separated the Jewish quarter of the city from the cemeteries of the Muslims and Jews. The city walls were demolished in 1866 and as soon as Thessaloniki was liberated from the Ottoman domination in 1912, the Tower was whithewashed as a symbolic gesture of cleansing.

Today the Tower is known as White Tower and houses an imortant exhibition dedicated to the history of the city.
